The Art of Soft Power

The Art of Soft Power

📣 I shared this tip at a recent presentation for reputation building.

We understand the context of SOFT POWER in politics and diplomacy. But the logic can be equally applied to your career.

Soft power, isn’t about title or authority. It’s the influence you build through interactions, persuasiveness, your initiative.

What do I mean by this? It could show up like this:

  • 👏 Gratitude - When you share gratitude and credit openly and regularly, not only within your team but with other stakeholders
  • 👁️ Visibility - When you reach out to a leader after you hear them present, acknowledging the things you took away, perhaps ask them for a coffee to exchange feedback
  • 👋 Inclusivity - When you make space for other voices that aren’t always the loudest
  • 🤲 Curiosity - When you make an effort to acknowledge and understand “contrarians” who have a different opinion to you

An introvert? A mid level manager? It doesn’t matter. These small rituals become culture shaping habits. And over time, they grow your soft power. Quiet influence that gets people leaning in, supporting your ideas, and rallying behind your leadership. You can be someone people choose to follow.

What’s one ritual or habit you’ve built that strengthens your soft power?
